The Yankees and Silver Shield Foundation Pledge to Cover the Educational Expenses for the Children of Slain NYPD Officer The New York Yankees and the Silver Shield Foundation has pledged to fund the educational needs for the children of slain NYPD officer, Rafael Ramos Officer Ramos and his partner, Officer Wenjian Liu, were tragically killed in the line of duty when they were ambushed in their squad car on Saturday. Ramos leaves behind two sons who will now no longer have to worry about the added stress of affording college in the wake of their father’s death. The Silver Shield Foundation was founded in 1982 by longtime Yankees owner, George Steinbrenner, as a means to help cover the educational costs of children who lost a parent in the line of duty. The foundation offers services to the surviving children of police officers and firefighters who served with the NYPD, New York Fire Department, New York Port Authority as well as the state police in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The foundation was started after Steinbrenner was moved by the image of four children surrounding their mother as they held an American flag at the funeral of their police officer father, who as killed while on duty. It was at that moment that the famed baseball team owner decided to provide children like those he saw in that image, a much needed helping hand. The Silver Shield Foundation describes its intent as this: “ The Silver Shield Foundation sets aside an education fund for each surviving child of police officers and firefighters. A diverse and flexible program aimed at meeting a family’s specific needs, it helps with tuition payments for prep school, college and university undergraduate and graduate school, and vocational and technical school.” The foundation switched hands to Casey Fuchs, the daughter of Steinbrenner’s longtime friend Jim Fuchs, after his death in 2010. Thousands of children have been helped during its 32 years of operation as a result of the educational assistance, tutoring and bereavement counseling offered.
