‘The Selfie’ Class At Penn State Helps Students Get Camera Ready Penn State University is taking a page from the books of Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus with their summer 2015 course all about the pop culture phenomenon, the “selfie.” Yes, you read that correctly. An entire course devoted to the art of selfie taking is headed to one of the top universities in the country. The course isn’t only for those looking to perfect their duck face in order to get more “likes” on Facebook, though. Quite the contrary, actually! The course description on the Penn State University Bulletin gives us a bit more insight into the course and the intent behind what is deemed by most as an eye roll worthy hobby by attention seekers. The course description says, “This course interactively examines the selfie and self-portraiture, identity construction, authorship, branding, celebrity, data-mining, dating and sexuality withing digital culture.” Students who decide to enroll in “The Selfie” aren’t going to slide by on their ability to take a post worthy selfie alone, however. They will also be required to complete the required amount of writing for the university’s English classes on top of mastering use of a selfie stick (totally kidding).
