Marshall University Appoints Gary White as New Interim President

Gary White has been appointed as the new interim president of Marshall University. White was voted into the position by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission with a unanimous vote during an emergency hearing on Tuesday.

The current Marshall University president, Stephen Kopp died unexpectedly on December 17th after a hospital stay. His death left the university without a president and the commission scrambling to find a replacement fast.

White will fill the void left by Kopp while the commission searches for a permanent replacement to fill the president’s seat. The process of finding a replacement is lengthy and should take about nine months to complete.

After he was voted in, White said “I’m gratified and humbled the board of governors has asked me to serve in this important interim role. I look forward to working with members of the board, the faculty and the staff to keep our university moving ahead and focused on students.”

Chairman of the Board of Governors, Michael G. Sellards, said of White’s temporary position “Gary is an outstanding choice to be the interim president. He reflects the mission and values of Marshall University and has a tremendous background in academic affairs, having as chairman of this board in the past and as a member of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission. The board is appreciative he has agreed to lead the university during this interim period.”
