Lawyer Amal Clooney Is Headed To Columbia University

Renowned human rights lawyer, Amal Clooney, is headed to Columbia University this spring for a stint as a guest lecturer. She will spend her time at Columbia lecturing on her field of expertise, human rights law as well as serve the Human Rights Institute of the law school as a senior fellow.

The university made the announcement on Friday and her addition to the faculty seems to be highly anticipated. Professor Sarah Cleveland, faculty director of Columbia’s Human Rights Institute said, “We are privileged to have an international human rights practitioner of Amal Clooney’s stature join our facility. Her extensive experience advocating before U.N. and regional human rights mechanisms compliments our existing offerings and will enrich the experience of our students.”

“It is an honor to be invited. I look forward to getting to know the next generation of human rights advocates studying here,” said Clooney in a statement.

Clooney certainly has the chops to fill a lecture hall as she has previously advised Ghanaian diplomat, Kofi Annan while he served as Syria’s special adviser for the United Nations. Another of her notable clients was WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who released a plethora of sensitive information online for all to read.

Furthering her fight for human rights, Clooney is currently serving as legal council for Mohamed Fahmy, a jailed Al Jazeera journalist. Fahmy was sentenced last year in Egypt on alleged terror-related charges, but a retrial is reported to being on March 19th.

Ms. Clooney has no doubt become a household name in the last year for more than her amazing work for the human rights of those around the world. Many have likely heard of her due to her September marriage to Hollywood’s perma-bachelor, George Clooney.

Here’s to hoping that she will soon be more recognizable for what the impact she has made through her profession rather than who she is married to.
