First Women’s College Awarded University Status in Odisha, India The proposal presented by the government in Odisha, an Indian, state to credit Ruma Devi Women’s College as a university, has officially been accepted by Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) according to The Times of India. This marks a very important mark in the movement to educate more women in India and enable them to have better future with higher paying jobs. RUSA has also awarded cluster university status to Khalikote College in Berhampur according to Osisha’s higher education minister Pradeep Panigrahi. Ruma Devi Women’s College and the cluster of Khalikote College are the first schools for women to receive university status in Odisha state. The minister also said that RUSA intends to add Berhampur’s Khallikote Autonomous College to the list of higher education institutions given cluster university status. Panigrahi said, “The Central government sponsored Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) accepted Odisha government’s proposal regarding this.” He also said that plans to add more classes to the curriculum is planned and that there will be Rs 55 crore released to each of the newly annotated universities by the RUSA.
