Career Database: 750 Careers, Salaries & Degree Requirements

Not sure which career to choose and want some raw data? We compiled information on 750 different careers and jobs in the United States, including average annual salary, hourly wage, degree needed, experience needed and projected job growth. The goal here is to provide a comprehensive resource that allows people to (1) browse careers by different data points and (2) find data quickly on virtually any career they can think of.

Heading Key

  • Experience (Important!): This column is not in the table because we found it was slightly confusing, since some careers technically require zero years of experience but also require tons and tons of training (e.g. doctors, professors). If you’d like to see this same table with the experience included, click here.
  • Degree: This is the degree you typically need to get this job. Again, this represents the minimum requirement. For many jobs, you can increase your chances of employment by getting additional degrees or certifications.
  • Growth: This represents the projected job growth for the next decade. Specifically, this is the projected growth in a field from 2012 to 2022. For reference, the national average for job growth across all fields is about 11% according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
  • $/Hr: This represents the average hourly wage for a given occupation. This data may not be available for all fields.
  • $/Yr: This represents the average annual salary for a given occupation. This data may not be available for all fields.

Asterisk Key

  • * : This job requires an internship, residency, apprenticeship or professional certification (not in this version of the table; if you’d like to see the table with minimum experience included, click here).
  • ** : This job is typically paid on a salary basis (used when hourly wage data is unavailable)
  • *** : This job is typically paid on an hourly basis (used when annual salary data is unavailable)

Our Methodology

Finally, a note on our methodology. As much as we could, we collected data from a single, reputable source, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (bls.gov). Salary data for these occupations is based on the most current estimates, which were taken by the BLS in May 2013. Where we found gaps, we used data from Salary.com, since we feel they have the most robust methodology of the major private salary data organizations. You can ready more about their methodology here.
